Baseball Clean Sweep

LAS VEGAS - UNLV's Eddie Gill broke up a 9-9 tie with a eighth-inning grand slam to give the Rebels a 13-9 win and series sweep over College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Rebels improve to 5-1 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 0-3.

Shane Clatterbuck (1-0) is credited with the win. He threw one hitless inning. Starter David Seccombe gave up six runs on nine hits in four innings of work. Ben Scheinbaum threw three innings, giving up three runs on six hits.

Charleston's Sean Oliver picked up the loss. He gave up three runs on one hit in one inning of work.

Gill finished the game 4-for-5 with four runs scored and four RBIs. Patrick Dobson went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Eric Nielsen went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Nielsen hit a two-run homer in the fourth.

Fernando Valenzuela finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs and one run scored.

In all, 18 batters were hit-by-pitch in the three-game series, 12 by Charleston and six by UNLV.

UNLV continues a nine-game home stand with tenth-ranked Cal State Fullertson next weekend.
