Dobson Hits Game-Winning Home Run In the Ninth

PROVO, Utah - Junior Patrick Dobson hit a ninth-inning home run to straight-away center to give UNLV a 6-5 victory over BYU and extend the Rebels winning streak to five games. Dobson finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

With the win, the Rebels improve to 18-7 overall, 4-0 in Mountain West Conference play. The Cougars fall to 6-13, 1-3 in league play.

Giovanni Pupu (1-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Matt Luca. Pupo pitched 4.0 innings, giving up one run on two hits. Luca gave up four runs off seven hits in 4.0 innings of work.

Ben Scheinbaum faced the final out in the game, a ground-out to third base, and picked up his first save of the season.

BYU's Jeff Mouser (3-2) earned the loss. He pitched a complete nine innings, giving up six runs off five hits with six strikeouts.

Brent Johnson, who homered for the Rebels in the first inning, finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. He also extended his consecutive-game hitting streak to nine games.

BYU was led by Doug Jackson, who went 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored. He had a pair of singles and a home run.

Eric Nielsen and Peter White contributed a single hit each.

UNLV and BYU continue the three-game series on Friday night at 6 p.m. PST.
