Dayton Stages Fly By Of Rebels
The UNLV Rebels (0-1) lost their 2008 season-opening match to the Dayton Flyers (1-0) in Tempe, Ariz. The teams were the first match of the day in Arizona State's Sheraton Classic. The Rebels came out strong with a win in the first set, but dropped the final three to lose the match by scores of 23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 26-24. [ + ] After closing out the 2007 season in Los Angeles against Long Beach State on Nov. 30, the UNLV Volleyball program has had nearly nine months off in between matches. After two weeks of preseason practices the Rebels will serve up the 2008 season on the road at the ASU Sheraton Classic in Tempe, Ariz., Aug. 29-30. UNLV will play a familiar foe in Arizona State, but Dayton and South Carolina are both first-time opponents for the Rebels. [ + ] After two weeks of preseason practice the 2008 UNLV Volleyball team will get a chance to play against some live competition and familiar faces this Saturday, Aug. 23, when the squad will host its Alumni Gatch. Eight former Rebels will play in the match that will take place at noon in the Cox Pavilion. The match is free and open to the public. [ + ] The UNLV Rebel volleyball team was picked to finish fifth in the 2008 Mountain West Conference Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league's head coaches and selected media. Colorado State, the 2007 MWC regular season champion, was picked to repeat in 2008, as they obtained 13 first-place votes and a total of 125 points. Utah came in second with 95 points, while BYU garnered one first-place vote and 82 points for third. New Mexico was selected fourth with 81 points, 18 more than UNLV's 63. TCU (56 points), San Diego State (48), Wyoming (28) and Air Force (15) round out sixth through ninth place, respectively. [ + ] Three former UNLV volleyball greats earned spots on the Mountain West Conference's 10th Anniversary Volleyball Team, as selected by a combined panel of media, institutional and conference personnel and on-line fan poll, the league announced Wednesday. Lauren Miramontes (2003-07), Maria Aladjova (2004-07) and Jada Walker (2004-07) represented the Rebels on the 16-member squad. [ + ] The UNLV volleyball program will be making three appearances on television this season, as the Rebels will be featured twice on The Mtn. and once on the CBS College Sports Network. In all, the Mountain West Conference will have 11 regular-season tilts aired between the two networks. [ + ]
